Southwest Measles Outbreak Declared Over After Months-Long Spread

A measles outbreak that began in January 2025 across the Southwest United States has been officially declared over as of August 18, 2025. The outbreak, which started in Texas and neighboring states, marked one of the largest resurgences of the disease since the U.S. declared measles eliminated in 2000. The epicenter of the outbreak was traced to Gaines County, Texas, with the virus spreading to several West Texas communities by mid-February, including Dallam, Dawson, Ector, Lynn, Terry, and Yoakum.

Cases were also confirmed in New Mexico, and by March 2025, the outbreak had reached Oklahoma, the Mexican state of Chihuahua, and Kansas. Health officials linked the initial introduction of the disease to a Mennonite community in Ontario, Canada, which was experiencing its own outbreak at the time.

In the United States, cases were concentrated within the Texas Mennonite community. Hundreds of individuals were infected, with more than 99 requiring hospitalization. The outbreak resulted in three fatalities: two children, aged six and eight, in Lubbock, Texas, and an adult in Lea County, New Mexico.

All three individuals who died were unvaccinated. Measles is a highly contagious but preventable disease through the MMR vaccine.

The fatalities underscore the critical role of vaccination in preventing the spread of measles and reducing the risk of severe complications. The outbreak serves as a reminder that despite the U.S. having declared measles eliminated in 2000, the disease can still be introduced and spread, particularly in communities with lower vaccination rates. The ability of the virus to cross state and international borders highlights the need for continued vigilance and cooperation in public health efforts.

Looking forward, health officials will monitor the situation to ensure the disease does not re-emerge. Efforts are expected to focus on increasing vaccination rates in affected communities and strengthening public health infrastructure to prevent and respond to future outbreaks.

The experience from this outbreak will provide valuable lessons for public health officials, policymakers, and communities, emphasizing the importance of ongoing investment in vaccination programs and infectious disease prevention. As the situation evolves, attention will remain on vaccination rates, public health initiatives, and any potential future outbreaks in the region.
