AMSTERDAM, October 18, 2026 — European regulators have taken a significant step toward making a new pancreatic cancer treatment available to patients across the continent. The European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use issued a positive opinion on October 15 recommending the approval of daraxonrasib, marketed as Rasonque, for adults with metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
A Breakthrough Against An ‘Undruggable’ Target
Metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma has long been considered one of the most difficult cancers to treat, often leaving patients with limited options and a poor prognosis. For years, the RAS protein, which acts as a key driver in the majority of pancreatic cancers, was deemed an undruggable target. Revolution Medicines, a California-based company, developed daraxonrasib to address this challenge.
According to the EMA, the drug works by binding the RAS protein to cyclophilin A. This process creates a complex that attaches to the RAS protein to block its activity. Unlike earlier inhibitors that targeted only specific mutations, such as KRAS G12C, daraxonrasib acts against a broad range of RAS pathway mutations. Mariano Ponz, an oncologist at the Cancer Center Clínica Universidad de Navarra, stated that this approach potentially benefits 90% to 95% of pancreatic cancer patients, compared to only 2% to 3% for previous therapies.
Clinical Results And Patient Impact
The recommendation for approval follows phase 3 results from the RASolute 302 trial. The study, which included 500 patients with metastatic disease that had worsened after previous systemic treatment, showed that the daily pill significantly improved outcomes. According to data presented at the ASCO cancer congress and published in The New England Journal of Medicine, patients treated with daraxonrasib achieved a median survival of 12.4 months, compared to 6.7 months for those receiving chemotherapy.
Progression-free survival also improved, reaching 7.2 months for patients on the pill versus 3.6 months for those on chemotherapy. Patients should consult their doctors regarding the most frequently reported side effects, which include diarrhea, rash, stomatitis, nausea, and vomiting. The EMA granted the drug an expedited, phased review to address the urgent need for better treatments, cutting the assessment time to less than 150 days.
Economic Hurdles And Supply Constraints
While the regulatory path is clearing, the practical reality of bringing the drug to patients involves significant financial and logistical challenges. The US Food and Drug Administration approved the drug in August 2026. In the United States, the wholesale list price for a 30-day course of Rasonque is approximately $39,800.
Once the EMA grants final authorization, individual European national governments will negotiate final prices. Reports suggest that the manufacturer may hesitate to launch in countries that seek lower prices, as these could serve as an unfavorable benchmark for US pricing policies. This strategy aligns with the Most Favoured Nation policy, which aims to align US drug prices with those in countries of comparable income.
Beyond pricing, manufacturing capacity remains a concern. Revolution Medicines has grown to between 1,100 and 1,300 employees, doubling its headcount over the last two years. However, the company is still a smaller firm transitioning from research to commercial operations. There is a risk that current production capacity may not be sufficient to meet a sharp rise in global demand, potentially limiting availability for standard prescriptions and compassionate use programs. European patients and their families now wait to see how these negotiations and supply chain factors will influence the actual rollout of the treatment.
