BEDFORD, July 17 — Tyler Morton, a 21-year-old artist from Bedford, England, died four weeks after his first symptoms appeared, according to his family. He first complained of an earache in January. The left side of his face went numb, and he struggled to walk.
A hospital diagnosed him with an ear infection and sent him home with antibiotics. The medication did not help.
His condition worsened. He began vomiting and lost function on his entire left side. His sister Ella Morton, 19, a mechanic, said a CT scan showed nothing untoward.
Doctors diagnosed vertigo and gave him anti-nausea medication. That did not help either.
Ella took him back to the hospital. There, he had two seizures and could barely talk. Five days later, a CT scan revealed a brain lesion.
He was referred to a specialist hospital in Cambridge for a scan and biopsy. A week later, the diagnosis came back: grade 4 glioblastoma, inoperable due to its location. He died shortly after.
A swift and devastating timeline
The record shows a rapid progression from a common complaint to a fatal diagnosis. From initial earache to death, the entire timeline spanned approximately four weeks. The case underscores the aggressive nature of glioblastoma, a malignant brain tumour that can evade early detection even with standard imaging.
Bedford, a market town in Bedfordshire with a population of 167,446 at the 2021 Census, has a long history as a centre of engineering and industry. The town was founded at a ford on the River Great Ouse and was the burial place of King Offa of Mercia.
Bedford Castle, built by Henry I, was destroyed in 1224. The town has been represented in Parliament since 1265 and is known for its large population of Italian descent.
A family’s search for answers
Ella Morton, a mechanic by trade, became her brother’s advocate as the medical system struggled to identify the cause of his symptoms. She told sources familiar with the case that the initial negative CT scan created a false sense of security. The family watched as Tyler’s condition deteriorated rapidly, moving from difficulty walking to full left-side paralysis within days.
The specialist referral to Cambridge proved critical. There, advanced scanning and biopsy confirmed the grade 4 glioblastoma.
The tumour’s location made surgical removal impossible, a common challenge with this diagnosis. Glioblastoma is the most aggressive form of brain cancer, with a median survival measured in months even with treatment.
Broader context for Bedford
Bedford traces its borough charter to 1166 under Henry II. The town’s history includes the imprisonment of John Bunyan in Bedford Gaol, where he wrote The Pilgrim’s Progress. The River Great Ouse became navigable to Bedford in 1689, and the railway arrived in 1846.
The Great Fire of Bedford in 1802 destroyed 72 properties, and the Great Flood of 1823 left a stone marker nearly two metres above ground level in St Johns Street. The town’s first woman town councillor, Mary Milligan, served in 1919 and was secretary of the local Women’s Citizens League.
Today, the borough council is led by a directly elected mayor, currently Tom Wootton of the Conservative Party. The Morton family’s experience highlights the challenge of diagnosing aggressive brain tumours when initial scans appear normal. Researchers continue to investigate better detection methods and treatments for glioblastoma, which remains one of the deadliest cancers. Consult your doctor for medical advice.
