Mothers urged to reclaim home healthcare role with homeopathy

A homeopathic consultant who has been treating patients since 1996 is calling on mothers to reclaim their position as the primary caregivers for minor ailments in their households, arguing that reliance on modern medicine and pharmaceuticals has undermined women’s confidence in managing everyday health issues. Joette Calabrese, founder of The Academy of Practical Homeopathy, contends that nourishing and caring for the family is a woman’s calling and that homeopathic medicine offers an avenue for mothers to take charge of home healthcare.

“I would argue that we women are the ones who really have a handle on knowing how to treat our families,” Calabrese said. “Unfortunately—I’m going to be brutally honest—I think it’s been ripped away from us … and replaced with lack of confidence, and in came an industry, a pharmaceutical industry and a medical industry, that’s just gone too far.”

A Return to ‘Kitchen Table Prescribing’

Calabrese runs The Academy of Practical Homeopathy, where she teaches individuals how to use homeopathic remedies at home. For mothers looking to start, she recommends developing a grasp of what she calls “kitchen table prescribing”—using homeopathic preparations to treat common family ailments.

She offered a practical example centered on active children. “Now, I’m not saying that all mothers can cure all conditions in all situations, but I always say if you’ve got a household full of boys, you might want to know what the medicines are … for boys who fall out of trees or who have skateboard injuries,” Calabrese said. For such injuries, she treats them with arnica montana, hypericum, ledum, or ruta.

A 2021 review published in the journal MDPI found that when arnica was used for acute and chronic pain, its effects were comparable to those of conventional treatments. Calabrese has been a proponent of homeopathy since opening her practice in 1996.

One of the benefits of knowing how to use homeopathy, she said, is the health freedom it provides. Even knowing only a handful of homeopathic remedies, she noted, can offer freedom from reliance on synthetic drugs or excessive medical testing. She emphasized that the approach is not a guarantee for all conditions. “I’m not saying that all mothers can cure all conditions in all situations,” she added.

The History and Controversy Behind Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine based on the principle that substances that cause symptoms in healthy individuals can, in minute doses, treat similar symptoms in the sick. German physician Samuel Hahnemann created the practice in 1796. It gained widespread popularity during the 19th century, with many institutions opening across Europe and the United States.

At the time, the practice appeared successful because other medical treatments available were often harmful. Interest in homeopathy declined later, and the last exclusively homeopathic medical school in the United States closed in 1920.

The practice saw a resurgence in the 1970s alongside the New Age movement. Practitioners create remedies through a process of repeated dilution. They often shake the product—a process called succussion—believing this helps the liquid retain a memory of the original substance. Scientific knowledge in biology and chemistry contradicts these claims.

Most clinical trials show no objective effect from homeopathic preparations. Because the remedies are typically biochemically inert, the mainstream medical community characterizes the practice as fraud.

The subject remains relevant as some people seek alternatives to synthetic drugs. This shift often stems from a distrust of chemical treatments. For these users, homeopathy represents a way to manage health outside of traditional medical systems.

Calabrese’s message taps into this broader cultural trend, urging mothers to rediscover what she sees as their natural role as family healers. Health officials and doctors advise consulting a medical professional before using any alternative treatment.
