AAPI Urges Global Physician Solidarity for Nepal Relief

OAK BROOK, September 8 — The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin launched an urgent humanitarian appeal for global physician solidarity to support disaster relief in Nepal, responding to widespread devastation that has left families displaced and communities struggling to meet basic needs. The appeal, announced from AAPI’s base in Oak Brook, Illinois, addresses immediate demand for medical care, food, shelter, clean water, and essential supplies. AAPI is mobilizing its nationwide network of physicians, healthcare professionals, and community leaders to support relief and rehabilitation initiatives.

Dr. Meher Medavaram, President of AAPI, issued a heartfelt appeal stating, “At times like these, our strength as physicians extends beyond the walls of our clinics and hospitals. It is our compassion and our willingness to stand with those in need that define us.” She called on AAPI members and friends to contribute to the Nepal Disaster Relief Fund, noting that every donation can provide critical assistance to families facing extraordinary hardship.

Dr. Medavaram also stated, “AAPI has always responded when humanity calls. Today, Nepal needs us,” and urged the community to “come together as one AAPI family and demonstrate the power of compassion, service, and collective action.” Dr. Vijay Maurya, Chair of the AAPI Board of Trustees, noted that the appeal builds on AAPI’s longstanding tradition of responding to humanitarian emergencies worldwide.

The organization has previously coordinated efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing medical supplies, public health education, telehealth support, and fundraising assistance for healthcare institutions in the United States and India. AAPI has also supported relief following earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes affecting South Asia and other regions, delivering medical assistance, essential supplies, and financial aid through partnerships with local organizations and charitable foundations.

Other AAPI leaders supporting the appeal include Dr. Krishan Kumar, President-Elect, who said, “Through collective generosity and action, AAPI hopes to bring relief to affected families, support rebuilding efforts, and restore hope to communities facing immense challenges.” Dr. Srini Gangasani, Vice President, encouraged members, families, friends, and colleagues to participate in the relief campaign. Dr. Soumya Neravetla, Secretary, stated that the appeal serves as a reminder that medicine is not only a profession but also a commitment to humanity.

Dr. Raghu Lolabhattu, Treasurer, urged physicians and supporters globally to stand together in compassion and service, embodying AAPI’s enduring values of healing, generosity, and global responsibility. AAPI leadership emphasized that immediate support is needed to address urgent humanitarian concerns and help communities begin the long process of recovery. The organization’s appeal encourages contributions of any size to support relief operations, with the goal of restoring hope, healing communities, and helping Nepal recover from the devastating tragedy.
