The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has completed the crediting of 8.25 percent interest for the 2025-26 financial year to member accounts, and the updated records are now available for review through a single official online portal. Members can access the passbook at passbook.epfindia.gov.in by logging in with a 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN) and a password. The EPFO system designates the UAN as the key identifier assigned to each member, serving as a single point of linkage for multiple Provident Fund accounts held by the same individual.
This feature directly addresses a long-standing fragmentation problem that had plagued India’s formal-sector workforce for decades.
From Fragmentation to Portability: The UAN Solution
Before the introduction of the UAN in late 2014, workers who changed employers routinely had to open new Provident Fund accounts with each new firm. Tracking multiple account numbers—each with its own separate balance and interest accrual—proved cumbersome for employees and created a system of duplicate records.
The 12-digit UAN eliminates that fragmentation by providing a permanent, portable identifier. When a member changes jobs, the new employer links the new PF account to the existing UAN, so all contributions from each employer flow into the same digital record. The interest calculation then applies to the combined balance, ensuring that retirement savings remain intact regardless of how many times a person changes jobs.
For the current fiscal year, the interest rate of 8.25 percent means that members who have maintained consistent contributions will see the full annual return applied to their accumulated corpus.
Verification and the 2025-26 Interest Credit
To verify that the interest has been credited correctly, members must visit the EPFO Member Passbook Portal, the only official channel for this transaction. After logging in with their UAN and password, the user selects the relevant Member ID from the portal interface. The system then displays a detailed statement showing contributions made during the year, any withdrawals processed, and the interest credited.
The 8.25 percent interest rate was announced for the 2025-26 fiscal year, and the crediting process has now been completed, making the updated passbook available for review. The verification window is currently open, and the record confirms that the interest has been credited to member accounts.
This transparency is a key feature of the EPFO’s digital transformation, which aims to simplify how workers track their savings and ensure long-term financial stability for the formal-sector workforce.
Broader Context: EPFO and India’s Social Security Framework
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation is a social security agency under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. It manages retirement plans for Indian workers, regulates provident funds, provides insurance for death and disability, and administers a basic pension scheme. The agency operates under the Code on Social Security, which replaced an earlier act from the early 1950s.
Registration is mandatory for all firms with a minimum number of employees. For workers earning below a set wage ceiling, the provident fund is compulsory; those earning above that limit may choose to join the scheme once, but they cannot leave it after opting in.
The introduction of the UAN in late 2014 was a government initiative to solve the historical difficulty workers faced when switching employers. By consolidating contributions and interest into a single digital record, the EPFO simplifies how workers track their savings. This portability means retirement funds remain intact regardless of job changes, reinforcing the broader goal of ensuring long-term financial stability for India’s formal-sector workforce.
The current interest credit for 2025-26 demonstrates the system functioning as designed: the 8.25 percent rate has been applied, the records are accessible, and members can verify the transaction through the official portal without the need to manage multiple account numbers.
