Third of Brits ‘ignore’ cancer signs – 8 symptoms to look out for

LONDON — A troubling new picture of how Brits respond to possible cancer symptoms has emerged, with research showing that a third of people who experienced eight ‘red flag’ signs did not see their GP for the next six months. Even among those who did make an appointment, a worrying 43% did not follow up if their symptoms continued, according to Cancer Research UK. An early cancer diagnosis can mean less invasive treatment and a better chance of survival.

Yet something is stopping people from taking that first step. The new figures from Cancer Research UK showed that difficulty getting an appointment, choosing to manage the symptom alone, or simply having other things to worry about were the key barriers holding people back.

Michelle Mitchell, Cancer Research UK’s chief executive, said: “Nearly one in two of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime, that’s why it’s so important to spot cancer early – when treatment is more likely to be successful.” The eight red flag symptoms are: a change in the appearance of a mole, an unexplained lump or swelling, unexplained bleeding between periods or after sex or after menopause, a sore that does not heal, blood in pee or poo, persistent difficulty swallowing, losing weight without trying, and coughing up blood.

Having these symptoms does not guarantee cancer. Over 90% of urgent referrals from GPs are not found to be cancer.

The same eight signs can also indicate a number of other conditions. The findings come as Cancer Research UK continues its partnership with Tesco to help address barriers and support people to seek help for potential cancer symptoms through Tesco Pharmacies. As part of the scheme, Tesco pharmacists have received special training. Consult your doctor for medical advice.
